Chapter Ten

Nolan was second-guessing himself about going to FBI headquarters with Adalyn, but he’d needed access to files that he couldn’t get at home. And it was also where he wanted to question Russell. That had meant another trip outside, another chance for the Grave Digger to come at them.

But thankfully, that hadn’t happened.

Since he couldn’t legally give Adalyn access to the info he was diving into, Nolan was working alone at his desk, but she wasn’t just sitting idly by. She was in the chair across from him and was using his personal laptop to do some unofficial diving into her boss’s past. A past that Nolan figured was eating away at her right now.

With the red flags that Russell might be the Grave Digger, it meant Adalyn might have been working next to a killer for months. And worse, a killer that might have lured her into a job just so he could keep her close for his plan to kill her. It sickened Nolan to think Russell might have been able to get away with it. Since she worked for him, she likely wouldn’t have hesitated to go somewhere with him if he’d asked. That somewhere could have been to a shallow grave when he finally intended to kill her.

Cody wasn’t staying idle on this part of the investigation, either. He was at the prison doing battle to get Donny Ray’s visitors logs and conversations released. Donny Ray’s lawyer was fighting that, citing some legal babble about the conversations being misconstrued, which in turn could be prejudicial for his client’s appeal. It wasn’t a fight that Donny Ray would win, but he could delay things that shouldn’t be delayed. Things that might help them catch a killer.

Nolan’s phone dinged with a message he’d been waiting for—confirmation that Russell would indeed be coming in for an official interview at 3:00 p.m., which was only thirty minutes from now. It was fast work setting up the interview, especially since it’d been only a couple of hours since Cody had dropped the bombshell and shown them the photo of Russell’s fiancée. Nolan would definitely question Russell about all of that, but he still needed to talk to Caroline and Jeb as well. If Jeb hadn’t shown up as promised by tonight, Nolan would start the process to find him.

Unfortunately, it was a process the Grave Digger might be taking as well.

Such as trying to triangulate Jeb’s location from the last calls he made before he’d started using a burner. Also tapping into his GPS data and any money trail Jeb might have left. Jeb had said he had Caroline at a hotel, and while he probably wouldn’t have used his credit card to secure the room, phone calls and Internet searches could be made to see who’d used cash to check into nearby hotels. That kind of info would require a warrant, but Nolan had no doubts he could get one.

“Russell will be here in about thirty minutes,” Nolan relayed to Adalyn.
